Founder of the consumer website askaboutmoney.com Ireland’s largest consumer website. The site takes no advertising or sponsorship to preserve its independence. It was founded by Brendan Burgess in December 1999 and is funded by him with some assistance from donations from members.

Commentator on consumer finance issues on radio, television and the print media.

Brendan presented a series of “Money Stories” on Today with Pat Kenny on RTE Radio 1 during summer 2010. He has also contributed on many occasions to the Matt Cooper Show on Today FM, Prime Time and Prime Time Investigates on RTE 1.

Brendan was appointed by the Minister for Finance, Charlie McCreevy, to be the first chairman of the Consumer Panel of the Financial Regulator in 2004. He held this position until 2007.

Brendan was appointed by the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, to be a member of the Expert Group on Mortgage Arrears in February 2010.

Irish Nationwide Building Society
Brendan has campaigned on behalf of the borrowing members of The Irish Nationwide Building Society since 2002. He put down a motion of no confidence in the Managing Director Michael Fingleton at the 2003 AGM. This motion gained the support of only 10% of the members.(Read Shane Ross’s report of the meeting here)

He has lobbied the Financial Regulator and the board of the Society about their lending practices.

Irish Permanent Building Society
Brendan campaigned unsuccessfully against the demutualization of the Irish Permanent Building Society.

The Panel Group
Brendan founded The Accountants Panel, a recruitment agency in 1987 and ran it until March 2010.
